June 10, 2025 BATTLEGROUND PRINCIPAL NAMED NAESP PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR Battleground Elementary Principal, Mrs. Kelly Withrow, has been widely recognized this year as both the Lincoln County Schools Principal of the Year (POY) and the Southwest Region Principal of the Year. At the end of May, Superintendent Allen was notified that the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals Association (NCPAPA) has selected Mrs. Withrow as the 2025 North Carolina nominee for the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) Elementary Principal of the Year. NCPAPA Executive Director, Dr. Shirley Prince, says, “We are honored to have Kelly represent North Carolina and NCPAPA as our NCPAPA 2025 Elementary Principal of the Year. Her leadership at Battleground Elementary shines through with not only her test scores, becoming the number one school in the state for academic growth, but also in the culture she has created, reducing teacher turnover and improving responses on the Teacher Working Conditions Survey. As the NCPAPA Elementary POY, Kelly will also represent North Carolina in the National Association for Elementary School Principals (NAESP)’s National Distinguished Principals (NDP) program. We are proud of the work Kelly continues to do in Lincoln County and cannot wait to see her shine on a national stage.” Superintendent Allen says, “Kelly Withrow embodies the kind of leadership that transforms a school community. Her recognition as North Carolina’s Elementary Principal of the Year is not only well deserved—it reflects the heart, vision, and relentless commitment she brings to Battleground Elementary each day. Her impact reaches beyond test scores; it’s seen in the confidence of her students, the trust of her staff, and the strength of her school culture. We are proud to see her represent Lincoln County and the state on a national platform.” The NDP program was established by the NAESP in 1984 to recognize elementary and middle level principals who set high standards for instruction, student achievement, character, and climate for the students, families, and staff in their learning communities. The program was based on three fundamental ideas: Children’s attitudes towards learning and their perceptions of themselves as lifelong learners are established in the beginning school years. The scope and quality of children’s educational experiences are determined primarily by the school principal, who establishes, through the important work of teachers and the support of caring parents, the character of a particular school’s program. The dedication and enthusiasm of the outstanding principals who guide children’s early education experiences should be acknowledged to both show appreciation for their work as well as to allow them to serve as models for others in the field. Each year, NDPs represent Pre-K-8th grade public schools from all across the country as well as principals in U.S. private schools and those from the United States Departments of Defence Office of Educational Activity and the United States department of State Office of Overseas Schools. Public school elementary and middle-level principals are nominated by their state and final selections are made by committees appointed by each of NAESP’s state affiliate offices.

June 9, 2025 GASTON COLLEGE, LINCOLN COUNTY SCHOOLS, AND ATRIUM HEALTH LINCOLN LAUNCH INNOVATIVE NURSING PROGRAM. A groundbreaking partnership between Lincoln County Schools, Gaston College, and Atrium Health Lincoln is transforming the future of healthcare education in North Carolina. Through the newly launched Health Academy, high school seniors now have the unprecedented opportunity to gain direct entry into a practical nursing program, making them the first high school students in the state with a clear path to becoming Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) as early as the summer following graduation. “This initiative, developed in partnership with Lincoln County Schools and Atrium Health Lincoln, provides these students with an unparalleled opportunity to jumpstart their nursing careers,” said Dr. John Hauser, President of Gaston College. “The hands-on clinical experience they will gain through Atrium Health is valuable and will help prepare them to be skilled health care professionals, ready to serve our local communities.” The Health Academy officially launched at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year and is housed at the Gaston College Lincoln Campus. The program equips students with college-level coursework, hands-on clinical training, and a direct route into the Gaston College Practical Nursing Program immediately after high school graduation. This innovative approach addresses both workforce needs and the rising interest among high school students in pursuing healthcare careers. Support from the Golden LEAF Foundation and the Lincoln County Rotary Student Loan Fund helped make the Health Academy a reality, with critical funding and resources to ensure its success. In addition, Atrium Health Lincoln plays a vital role by providing clinical experiences that are essential for preparing students to enter the healthcare field with confidence and competence. “This is more than just a program—it’s a life-changing opportunity for students in Lincoln County,” said Superintendent of Lincoln County Schools, Dr. Aaron Allen. “It exemplifies what strong community partnerships can accomplish when we work together to invest in our students and our local workforce.” With this initiative already drawing attention across the state, the Health Academy stands as a model for how public schools, higher education institutions, and healthcare providers can collaborate to create meaningful, career-ready pathways for students. Keep an eye on these trailblazing students—our future healthcare heroes are already in training. He is a graduate candidate for School Leadership from Appalachian State University. Mr. Richardson has his Master’s in Education with a concentration in mathematics from UNC-Greensboro, and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Elementary Education from Lenoir-Rhyne University. “I am so excited to join the West Lincoln family.
