On Monday, February 2, 2026, all eyes will be on a famous groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil. Every year, people gather at a place called Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania to see what Phil will do.
How Does the Legend Work?
It’s like a furry weather forecast! People watch to see if Phil sees his shadow when he comes out of his burrow:
If he sees his shadow: Phil gets scared and runs back inside. This means we will have six more weeks of winter. Put on your heavy coat!
If he does NOT see his shadow: This means winter is ending soon. We can say hello to an early spring!
Is Phil Always Right?
Even though it’s a fun tradition, Phil isn’t always a perfect weather reporter. Sometimes he predicts more winter while the flowers are already starting to bloom! It is mostly a fun way to celebrate the middle of the winter season.
