Creativity was in full swing in Mrs. Russell’s Drawing I and Drawing II classes at North Lincoln High School as students collaborated on a fun “mashup” art challenge. Each student drew a word from a basket and worked with a partner to create a drawing that combined both ideas into a single design. From playful pairings like “yoyo and tree” to imaginative blends like “honey and yacht,” students stretched their creativity, practiced teamwork, and produced some truly unique artwork.

A student drawing taped to a classroom wall shows a boat labeled “USS Honey” floating on a golden honey-colored surface, with bees flying around it and a large honeycomb structure on the left. The illustration blends the words “honey” and “yacht” into a single creative scene.
Two students sit at a classroom table coloring a shared drawing labeled “Honey” and “Yacht.” One student colors a honeycomb structure while the other shades a boat surrounded by bees. Colored pencils are spread across the table as the students work together on the artwork.
A student drawing taped to a classroom wall shows a large tree with multiple branches. Several yo-yos hang from the branches by strings, combining the ideas of a tree and yo-yo into one imaginative illustration.
A student’s hand holds a pencil while sketching a tree on white paper at a classroom table. Small paper labels reading “Tree” and “Yo-yo” are placed nearby, showing the word prompts used for the collaborative drawing activity.

January is National Mentoring Month, and we are proud to celebrate the mentors who show up, listen, encourage, and believe in our students every day. 💙

Across our schools, mentors help students build confidence, set goals, and see what’s possible for their future. Sometimes it’s academic support. Sometimes it’s a check-in or a word of encouragement. Always, it’s about connection.

Thank you to the educators, staff members, volunteers, and community partners who invest their time and hearts into mentoring. Your guidance makes a lasting difference—one student, one relationship, one moment at a time.

We would love to have you as a mentor! If you are interested, visit the website linked below and reach out to a school principal!

This morning, the Student Lighthouse Team at Union Elementary School put leadership into action by becoming chefs for the day. 🥞🥓 Students prepared and served a pancake and bacon breakfast for school staff, modeling the 7 Habits through teamwork, responsibility, and servant leadership. It was a meaningful—and memorable—way to start the final day of school before winter break.

Flashback Friday!
Today we’re featuring Mrs. Beth Mauney Ludwig — a proud Lincoln County Schools graduate who is now giving back to students at West Lincoln High School!

📚 Mrs. Ludwig attended G.E. Massey, Asbury, Lincolnton Middle, and Lincolnton High. She remembers the many wonderful teachers she had, but especially credits Mrs. Deanna Moretz for making math “click” in high school. Mrs. Ludwig recalls, “She had such patience and wit about her that all my previous fears seemed to melt away, and my confidence grew.”

🍎 Today, Mrs. Ludwig serves as the Career Development Coordinator in the CTE department at WLHS. She is passionate about helping students succeed and values the strong sense of collaboration and support among LCS educators.

💬 Mrs. Ludwig shares:
“What I love most about my job is helping students with career planning. Many students feel uncertain about their future, and making that decision can be overwhelming. I enjoy engaging in discussions with them to learn more about their interests and aspirations, allowing me to provide meaningful resources to help them make informed choices.

It’s incredibly satisfying when a career conversation leads to a student signing up for an internship, even if they discover that the career they initially considered isn’t the right fit. Students need to understand that it’s perfectly acceptable to pivot and change directions; doing so does not equate to failure. This realization brings me the greatest satisfaction in my work.”

💙 Thank you, Mrs. Ludwig, for your dedication to our students and for inspiring them to dream big while reminding them that it’s okay to change direction.
