A note from Mrs. Grant: My class read the book, Balloons over Broadway and learned about the history of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Students created balloons of their own and then we had a parade of our own.

North Carolina will award the Purple Star Award Designation to those schools that demonstrate military-friendly practices and a commitment to military students and families. Schools that apply and earn the award will receive a Purple Star recognition to display on the school premises. Love Memorial earned the Purple Star recognition for the school year 23-24 and is currently applying for the 24-25 school year. Our guidance counselor, Mrs. Beard grew up in a military family and has taken the initiative to assist with this process. As part of this commitment to students of military families, the students participated in a day of Purple Up.

On Friday, November 8th, Love Memorial celebrated Veterans Day with a school wide assembly that included the Presentation of Colors by West Lincoln High School JROTC Color Guard. Special guest speakers were Lincoln County natives and West Lincoln High graduates, Captain Shane Poole and Captain Billy Baker. Veterans from the area were invited to attend and were recognized for their service. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions of the guest speakers and to thank all the veterans for their service as they exited the gym. All the veterans were gifted with student created cards and pictures .

What do you do with leftover Halloween pumpkins? You do a math and science activity! Mrs. Burgess’s class grouped pumpkin seeds into groups of ten and hundreds! What is your guess on how many seeds were in the pumpkin? After counting the seeds we filled the pumpkin with things from around our room like apples, candy paper, tissue box, and a few other things. On Earth Day, we will dig it up and see what happened to the pumpkin, along with the things we put inside.

October is AAC Awareness Month! AAC or Augmentative and Alternative Communication are the laminated communication boards and devices that people who are minimally or nonspeaking use to communicate. In order to learn that AAC can be their voice, children have to see adults around them “modeling” or touching the boards/devices while they talk. This teaches children that they can use AAC to ask for things and make friendships! This is our final week of our Next Top Modeler competition here at Love where staff have been counting the times they model AAC with students and the one with the most times gets a basket made up of items and gift cards from the amazing local businesses that donated to this event! Our final Love Memorial’s Next Top Modeler is Melissa Wilfong! Melissa is an assistant in a self-contained adapted exceptional children’s classroom and she has been increasing her modeling with students throughout the month! Melissa is dedicated to providing an environment rich in learning and communication for her students. Thank you, Melissa, for continuously supporting your students' human right to communicate! Our competition may be over, but staff and students have seen the positive outcome of providing AAC and modeling that we hope will continue the rest of the school year! Congratulate all the staff members who participated on their dedication to providing communication opportunities to their students! Our other modeling superstars this week are: Virginia Myers Bartley Bess Tabitha Willis Amanda Williams Nicole Owensby Cathy Robinson Carrie Oaks Amy Savage Ashley Spargo Kaitlyn Cloninger Grace Goins Sarah Broome Thank you to the businesses that donated to our challenge this month! Sawyer, Hayden, and Graci are the very first students to be nominated for a Love Leads Award. This is a POSITIVE office referral at Love Memorial. To be nominated a student must demonstrate one or more of the seven leadership qualities we promote in Lincoln County Schools. Mrs. Hoffman, Mr. May, and Ms. Biggerstaff's day is absolutely made when they get this type of official referral!

Family night at Love was a lot of fun and we want to take a moment to recognize a few student leaders who worked at the event. These students shared leadership activities to try at home with last night's participants.
